1. Take any bottle (we used a wine bottle) and remove the label. Clean and remove any adhesive as best as you can.
2. Use painters tape to create your design.
3. Spray paint the full bottle. Spray from a good distance since too close may cause the clumps or the paint to run. You want to make it as smooth as possible.
4. Allow to dry.
5. Carefully remove the painters tape. We used tweezers to grab the tape since we had thin lines we wanted to make sure stayed on.
6. Add fresh flowers and enjoy!
Use them for table settings or as decor for the home.

The not so fun part of business, but we all have to do it.
Luckily, we are getting it out of the way early
so we can focus on the good stuff.

Last night was a late night here at the xiokat studio. It’s been raining quite a bit these past few days, which is nice when I am working in the studio. I enjoy listening to and watching the rain outside my window, making it very relaxing and allowing me to concentrate and focus on the little details of my work. Sewing is not the easiest thing to do and it can be very frustrating at times. It’s good to know when to step away from the machine and when to come back and give it your complete attention. Good tunes also help.
We added some last minute touches to some of our pieces last night. We had a special delivery yesterday; finally received our labels for our apparel collection. And we love them! We decided to keep it clean and basic and went for pure cotton cloth labels.
Everything is finally coming together and we have a very busy week ahead of us, preparing to launch the shop at the end of next week! For now, take a peek at the site, for a preview of what’s to come!

BEHIND THE SCENES

We had a very productive weekend (and week!) in the studio. It started with a few days of cutting and sewing a few quantities of each product. Then on Friday, we spent the day styling and shooting the pieces. We are so excited with how the pictures came out and can't wait to launch the shop at the end of the month, just in time for Small Business Saturday.

It's so easy to get caught up in what you think is needed to do a shoot like this. At first, we were trying to find a space with a white backdrop and considered renting out a studio. We also needed a model. I was also worried about taking the photos and not having them come out the way we envision them. I love photography but by far am I a pro. And this year I have slacked on the picture taking, so I wasn't feeling too confident in my skills. But I scoured my favorite blogs, like The Veda House and Designlovefest for tips, and perused Pinterest for inspiration. This class also helped. We decided to model ourselves, and we made the most with what we had. We used our own props and clothes and set up in the office at my new house.
We woke up to a gloomy sky, but decided to work with it. The overcast skies diffused the light nicely. We knew the overall look we wanted to achieve and played with poses and angles throughout. What's great about working with your sister is that you can be silly. And these silly moments led to some creative shots. We can't wait to share them with you!
Like I mentioned, we're not pros (yet!) but we wanted to share a few tips we learned when doing these type of shoots:
1. Work with what you have. Like I said, it's so easy to get caught up with the feeling that you need fancy equipment or a professional model to get it right.
2. Have an idea of the look you want to achieve. Search images and even creating a vision board can help. I made thumbnails of some poses and angles that I was considering for the different pieces, just to have somewhere to start and get the momentum going. It also great to have a story board so that the images maintain a cohesive look throughout. This can simply be achieved by reusing some of the props in various shots.
3. At the same time, Get creative. Try new poses or angles that you weren't planning on doing. Sometimes these are the shots that you end up liking the best.
4. Use natural light. It really creates the best overall look and requires minimal editing at the end.

Last week we shared our new business cards with you. Even though we have had the logo designed for a few years now, it took us a bit of time to decide on the look of the cards. In creating a brand, we wanted to make sure that the look and feel would read cohesively across the board - business collateral, the products that we are creating and the pieces we are collecting to sell in the store. We want to share a little bit of our story in creating xiokat, as well as the process of starting a small business as we go through it, so we've decided to add this column - Biz Notes - as part of our In The Studio series.
First the history (and an explanation for the photos above). The idea began (as you will read in our forthcoming website) when Katty and I went on a two week trip to Europe in 2005, backpacking through Spain, France and Italy. I had just graduated from architecture school and was in love with the city of Barcelona, where I had studied abroad two years prior. I wanted to share this city (and the adventure of traveling) with my sister, who had just graduated high school. My sister was (and is!) very creative and was about to start her degree in fashion design that Fall. So we picked five cities to travel through - Barcelona, Paris, Milan, Venice and Rome - and set off on an unforgettable adventure. We made no hotel plans, just booked as we got there (that in itself created some crazy stories); made friends along the way (some who we still keep in touch with to this day); ate and soaked up the sights, colors, fashion, graphics, and architecture of each unique city. We went to a goodbye party for friends we had just made, drank wine with strangers on an overnight train to Paris, slept off the hangover under the Eiffel Tower, got invited to a free concert in Rome that turned out to be Live8 - all in all a great trip. On one of those train rides, we talked about how we just wanted to continue traveling and see the world. We came up with the idea of starting a company where we could design graphics inspired by the different cities we would travel to and put them on shirts, totes, mugs, etc. This was all before the Etsy craze and the popularity of blogs. We named the company Travelogz and sketched a few designs right there. Then we got back and life happened. Katty started fashion school and I started working at a new design firm, and we both got soaked up into our new routine. Travelogz was put on the backburner. But every so often, we would come up with ideas and sketches for the studio.
A few years later, Katty graduated from college and, with friends, we put together a collaborative show that showcased her friend's designs, artwork, photography and more. This molded the idea for a studio that would allow us to create designs inspired by out travels, but also showcase our friends work and other local and independent designers. We named the company Xiokat (after us). We felt that this market, although big in cities like Brooklyn and San Francisco, was just awakening in South Florida, and we wanted to be a part and contribute to the growing community. Plus it would allow us to do what we love and share it with the people we love and care to see succeed. And so we began. It still continues to be a work in progress, but we are excited to see it come to fruition. Right now, we are soaking up inspiration and learning the bits of creating a strong foundation. We have been slow to launch the website and open the shop before we feel its ready, but it will happen soon. And we will be sharing more of that process in future Biz Notes. These are the beginnings, and there is much more story to be written. Stay tuned!

We've been working on setting up our workspace and are having fun playing with new art for the walls.
All of the prints in this photo (with the exception of the arabic one) were created by Katty and a few (specifically the maps!) will be available at the xiokat shop in the next few weeks!
The idea of graphic maps is what started the xiokat dream, as we traveled through Europe and poured through many while exploring each city.
Stay tuned for more on the shop opening date!
